Why, hello there!! We are currently hiring hundreds of candidates in the role of Camp Leader for the 2017 Summer Day Camp season. Interested in joining our team/cause/family? Please review the following:

What does a Camp Leader do?

Camp Leaders work directly with youth, ages 5 - 16, in the Summer Day Camp programs. The ratio is generally 10 to 1 depending on the age range you are working with. They help lead games, activities, team builders and get-to-know-you's daily, as well as support other parts of the daily schedule, which can include field trips, swimming, cooking, building, computers and so much more. Camp Leaders are role models for the values of the YMCA; caring, honest, respect and responsibility. They are expected to be stewards of these values to each other, all participants and anyone visiting the Y.

Qualities of a successful Camp Leader?

Successful Camp Leaders are positive and flexible; lots of things can change in a day and being able to roll with the punches is important. They need to be enthusiastic and able to really engage in the daily schedule; the more fun you have, the more fun the kids will have too. They need to be patient and empathetic, which is so important when building trusting relationships. They need to be excellent problem solvers and able to react quickly when needed. They need to have amazing endurance; the camp season can be long and we need staff that are consistent through the whole season. But most of all, they need to be passionate about working with youth and understand the bigger picture of what the Camp Program does; helps build strong communities!

What are the basic qualifications of a Camp Leader?

  • Minimum 18 years of age and high school graduate
  • At least one year experience working with children preferred
  • Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of campers ages 5-16, as well as parents and staff of diverse populations.
  • Ability to lead campers in at least 2 of the following areas: recreational games, drama, crafts, outdoor education, songs, sports, aquatics, team building or science.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required prior to working with participants and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.

What will being a Camp Leader do for me?

Great question! Well, first of all, you will receive a competitive hourly pay rate. Though a part-time position, many shifts can work up to 8 hours a day. Camp Leaders also receive other benefits, including a free YMCA Family membership, which allows you to visit any branch in the association, paid sick time (once eligible), discounts on Y programs, paid training and professional development and the opportunity to really make impact this summer!

In regards to you career, the Camp Leader position is a great way to start building or continue to build a resume of transferable, professional skills and experience. Camp leaders ensure positive behavior management, they are communicating daily with youth and their families, they are creating and facilitating daily programming, they ensure policies and procedures are followed at all times, they are working as a team or individually to reach camp goals and so much more. This type of experience is really the foundation of any position and can help you build a career within the Y or anywhere your professional journey takes you!
