Welcome to the YMCA of San Diego County!

Hello!! We are currently hiring candidates in the role of Unit Leader for the 2017 Summer Day Camp season. If you are interested in the Unit Leader position, please review the following:

What does a Unit Leader do?

A Unit Leader is a leadership level Day Camp Position. They oversee a specific Day Camp program, including all staff and participants of the program. They are responsible for creating the calendar of daily activities & events for each week of camp, whether a general camp per age group OR a specialty camp, like “Top Chef” Camp, “Fashionista” Camp, “Minecraft” Camp or “Star Wars” Camp, etc. These positions communicate daily with parents/guardians and are a figurehead for their camp program.

What are the Qualifications of a Unit Leader?

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and a high school graduate. 
  • At least (2) years experience in the day camp setting or similar preferred. 
  • Previous experience working supervising staff preferred.
  • Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of campers ages 5-16, as well as parents and staff of diverse populations.
  • Ability to supervise and interact with staff and campers.
  • The physical ability to lead in group activities and to perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability for program continuity.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required prior to working with participants and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.

Qualities of a successful Unit Leader?

Successful Unit Leaders are high energy, motivated and enthusiastic about camp daily! As they provide leadership for their area of camp, they are expected to be highly skilled at behavior management, able to quickly accommodate for any updates or last minute changes to program, have a high level of engagement with both kids and staff and are passionate about the camp experience. As a supervisor of staff, they are positive leaders and able to provide encouragement, feedback and support in a thoughtful way. Unit Leaders must be highly skilled at written and verbal communication, which will happen daily with parents/guardians, camp leadership, staff and participants. They must be professional, knowledgeable, organized and creative.

What will being a Unit Leader do for me?

Great question! Well, first of all, you will receive a competitive hourly pay rate. Though a part-time position, many shifts can work up to 8 hours a day. Camp Leaders also receive other benefits, including a free YMCA Family membership, which allows you to visit any branch in the association, paid sick time (once eligible), discounts on Y programs, paid training and professional development, and the opportunity to really make impact this summer!

In regards to you career, the Unit Leader position is a great way to start building or continue to build a resume of transferable, professional skills and experience. Not only are they supervising staff, which includes training, feedback and disciplinary support, but also creating and implementing programming, reading and following budgets, problem solving issues, ensuring policies & procedures are being followed, creating systems & best practices for organization and communication and so much more. These responsibilities are the foundation of any position and can help you build a career within the Y or anywhere your professional journey takes you!
