The YMCA of San Diego County is getting geared up for their 2017 Summer Day Camp Season! A huge component of the Day Camp program happens outside of branches on field trips all over San Diego County. However, to get there, the Y needs amazing Bus Drivers to support transportation.

What's a typical day like?

If you've never driven for Day Camp know your days can be very different. You are not following one set route and may be going to multiple locations, dropping off groups, then picking up others. The schedule of activities is created by the branch and will be communicated to you prior to your work day. You like variety to your driving day, well, this job is for you!

What's it like working for Day Camp?

Though the first priority for camp is safety, the next priority is for all participants to enjoy the program! Day Camp is a fun environment for kids to experience new things, build friendships, sing songs and so much more. As a Day Camp bus driver, your role supports this environment. Obviously, safety is your number #1 concern, but after that, we hope all Bus Drivers can take the opportunity to engage with the kids and staff and be a part of that "fun" environment. Day Camp Staff will be supervising the kids at all times, so you can work directly with them if you have any needs to make bus time for successful!

(10) - Magdalena Ecke YMCA (Encinitas)

(1) - La Jolla YMCA (La Jolla, west of the 5)

Basic Assignment

This position will drive participants to and from YMCA programs and/or community events.

Qualifications

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute OR a current DL 45/California Special Driver Certificate with no #6 restrictions indicated.
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Valid CA Class B Drivers License
  • Valid DL 51A Medical certificate
  • Air brakes & passenger endorsements (transit qualified)
  • Good driving record
  • Current CDL H6 print-out from California DMV (must be dated within 30 days of application)
  • Pass pre-employment & random drug testing as required by the DOT
  • Criminal record clearance
  • Pass vehicle proficiency exam
  • Visual & auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • School bus certificate/ DL 45 (if SPAB transportation is required)
  • Copy of current T-01 card (if SPAB transportation is required)

Major Functions

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and passengers
  • Keep accurate records of vehicle usage
  • Comply with state regulations, regarding proper usage, inspection and maintenance of vehicles
  • Practice non-aggressive defensive driving techniques
  • When not driving the bus, employee may be asked to assist in the leadership of YMCA activities
  • Communicate effectively with staff, participants and parents
  • Follow and maintain YMCA standards, guidelines, objectives and goals
