Berico Technologies is seeking a talented and hard working Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Software Engineer to become the technical lead and product owner for CLAVIN (, and to represent our company on all things geospatial!


CLAVIN stands for Cartographic Location And Vicinity INdexer, which is a successful,  award-winning open source ( ) software package for document geotagging and geoparsing , providing context-based geographic entity resolution against one or more gazetteers using heuristics to improve accuracy. CLAVIN has contributors/users from across government, academia and industry. The successful candidate who joins our team will lead and implement the CLAVIN product development roadmap driven by client/end-user feature requests and market research. You will also have the opportunity to present CLAVIN at local and national NLP/GIS meetups and conferences.


As our GIS lead, you will also participate in focused services engagements with our commercial and Federal clients, engineering and developing capabilities.  This involves (a) requirements analysis and defining interfaces, (b) fusing information from Imagery and other Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), (c) performing tool and algorithm integration/development, (d) developing location-based indices/databases and deploying tools that facilitate Mult-INT, Multi-Source and Multi-Platform GEOINT assets, and (e) supporting functional analysis -e.g. geotemporal analysis, trade studies, etc.

Minimum Requirements :

  • 3+ yrs experience with rapid prototyping and software development using languages such as Python, Java, etc.
  • 5+ yrs experience programming with geospatial data, tools, techniques, systems.
  • Familiarity with natural language processing, feature extraction and ontologies as they relate to geotagging functions.
  • Self-motivated and can work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field -e.g. Computer Science,  Mathematics, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Geographical Sciences, etc.  (may substitute 4 years of additional relevant work).

  • Know what IOC and AOP are and why they are useful.
  • Most importantly, if you KNOW that Han shot first!

Major Bonuses , but not necessary:

  • Experience developing location-based indices/databases and sources in multi-security domain environment.
  • Practical experience with data technologies such as SOLR/Lucene, HBase, Spark, Impala, Hadoop, Redis, Memcache, etc., and/or equivalent managed services on Amazon Web Services.
  • Master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Active Open Source framework contributor, or have your own blog!
