DESC is the largest multi-service agency serving homeless adults in the Puget Sound region. DESC opened its doors in 1979 as an emergency shelter, a place for vulnerable adults living with behavioral health disorders and chronic homelessness to come in out of the cold for the night. In 2009, DESC celebrated 30 years of opening doors to end homelessness. Today our mission is not merely to offer shelter, but to end the homelessness of our community's most vulnerable people, through an integrated array of clinical services and supportive housing that allows men and women to reclaim their lives and reach their highest potential.

Supportive Housing Positions

At DESC Supportive Housing is built on the Housing First Philosophy, which covers the principles that housing is a basic human right and once the chaos of homelessness is eliminated from a person's life, clinical and social stabilization occur faster and are more enduring.

Most DESC housing residents live with challenges that would seem overwhelming or insurmountable to the average person: mental illness, drug and alcohol addictions, HIV, physical or developmental disabilities, and extreme poverty. In most cases, they are not affected by just one of these conditions, but are multiply disabled and have long histories of homelessness or frequent failures in other low-income housing settings. To increase their opportunity for success, residents in each of our housing sites have access to 24-hour a day, 7 days a week supportive services:

  • State-licensed mental health and chemical dependency treatment
  • On-site health care services
  • Daily meals and weekly outing to food banks
  • Case management and payee services
  • Medication monitoring
  • Weekly community building activities

Entry Level Positions

Residential Counselor: Residential Counselors are responsible for the provision of basic services to residents and performance of day-to-day building operation functions at DESC supportive housing projects.

Location: DESC Housing Projects There are currently 15 Housing Locations in Seattle.

Pay: $13.75- $15.14 per hour DOQ ($0.75 Night Shift Differential)

Union: This position is represented by SEIU1199

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week), non-exempt, hourly

Shift: Swing 3:30pm-12am or Night 11:30pm-8am

 

Shelter Counselor: Shelter Counselors, in conjunction with other professionals, are responsible for the provision of basic services to clients and for the safe day-to-day operation functions of Shelter services.

Location: Shelter

Pay: $ 13.75- $15.14 per hour DOQ ($0.75 Night Shift Differential)

Union: This position is represented by SEIU1199

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week), non-exempt,

Shifts: Swing 3:30pm-12am or Night 11:30pm-8am
