Job Summary:

HarvestPlus seeks a highly-motivated Senior Development Specialist to join our External Affairs team. The successful candidate will be an innovative and ambitious storyteller, with experience crafting compelling donor-focused messages out of complex and highly technical information. This exempt position is a two year, fixed term, renewable appointment and is located at HarvestPlus headquarters in Washington, D.C.

 

Background:

HarvestPlus improves nutrition and public health by developing and promoting biofortified food crops that are rich in vitamins and minerals while providing global leadership on evidence and technology. HarvestPlus is part of the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH). CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. Its science is carried out by its 15 research centers in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. The HarvestPlus program is coordinated by two of these centers, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

HarvestPlus is managed in a complex international context.  It currently operates across the financial management, accounting and contracting systems of several independent CGIAR centers.  A joint venture agreement between IFPRI and CIAT provides an overall research-based framework, and memoranda of understanding allow for the operation of nine semi-independent offices in eight countries under various CGIAR centers. 

 

Essential Duties:

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Drive creation and development of well-organized, donor-focused communications – from project concept creation with technical specialists to full proposal development – across global teams of multi-disciplinary staff.

  • Develop detailed and strategic project budgets in collaboration with country office and finance teams

  • Perform analytics, research and writing to advise staff and senior management on strategy for donor outreach (bilaterals, multilaterals, foundations and individuals) and implementation, advocacy and research partnerships.

  • Organize and draft donor reports, tracking progress and staff inputs across the organization.

  • Collaborate and communicate across full HarvestPlus team, especially Country Managers and their staff, as well as global and regional communications, marketing and research teams.

  • Supervise interns and staff as needed, including providing direction in the creation of database systems and document repositories.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, plus a minimum of five years of relevant work experience, preferably including fundraising in international development.

  • Highly effective and versatile communication skills--both written and oral. Ability to listen effectively and synthesize scientific/programmatic content for multiple audiences is critical.

  • High level of professionalism, including being conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines, and communicating in a timely and responsive fashion.

  • Self-motivated and comfortable in a global team, including working well with team members located in multiple time zones and countries. Candidate must be able to work independently to accomplish key goals and complete projects.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to structure analyses that drive strategic decisions.Candidates must be detailed-oriented and comfortable working with log frames, indicators, budgets and technical public health/ agriculture information.

  • Willingness and ability to travel to work with global team members and partners (potentially 2+ international trips per year).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • International experience, especially in Asia and Africa.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Capsule, and donor databases.
  • Background, or interest in, agriculture and nutrition.
