Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To keep the animals clean and fed throughout the day as well as keep work areas clean and well stocked by performing the following duties.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Ensure that animals in all areas have food, water, and needed supplies **
  • Assist with providing enrichment to cats**
  • Handle animals of various temperaments including aggressive and feral cats**
  • Transport animals to other cages or different areas in the shelter**
  • Replenish supplies in animal rooms**
  • Clean animal cages in both the adoption and holding areas**
  • Clean all animal and work areas including kitchen and hallways**
  • Wash dishes, litter pans, and larger crates in the K9 Kitchen**
  • Wash and dry laundry including towels, sheets, blankets, etc. **
  • Assist with garbage removal**
  • Exercise patience and tact when working with difficult, emotional or angry people**
  • Perform other duties as requested (ie. Help with processing animals, hold animals for euthanasia, assist with cleaning small animals such as rabbits, etc.) **
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state and federal laws**
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others**
  • Maintain good housekeeping**

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. (1)

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent education. Animal experience is preferred.

           

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

           

CONTACTS: Frequent contact with shelter staff, adoption and admissions staff and clinic staff.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts.

           

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense and understanding in order to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions and ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS/TOOLS: Possess beginner computer skills and have the ability to learn internal software. Able to perform work requiring use of various pieces of equipment and tools, such as, animal chip scanner, dishwasher, washer and dryer, power washer and floor machine, medical syringes, and cleaning supplies.

           

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. (1)

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach, handle, lift 20 pounds, carry 20 pounds, pull 20 pounds, kneel, crouch, see, and speak.  Frequently required to lift/carry/pull/push 50 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. (1)

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Employee is occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts, electrical wiring, chemicals, and is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat/cold/humid conditions, slick floor conditions, and vibrations. Some cleaning and storing is in elevated, potentially precarious locations. The noise level in the work environment is loud.
