The Vice President of Corporate Development - Origination is responsible for leadership and outcomes of the M&A origination process. This role works closely with CBIZ senior management, as well as Business Unit (BU) leadership teams to develop, and execute the company’s acquisition growth strategy.

The priorities for the role include:

  • Responsible for supporting the organization’s long-range strategic plans to ensure growth through mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and divestitures.

  • Develops a robust pipeline of acquisition targets that closely aligns with CBIZ’s strategy through close collaboration with CBIZ’s senior leaders.

  • Builds strong external relationships across a wide range of constituents to include bankers, sponsors and other intermediaries to source ideas for potential transactions.

  • Initiates and leads business development meetings with prospective targets.

  • Supports the company throughout the negotiation process as needed.

  • Participates in structuring the transaction to best represent the company’s interests and manage risk.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with all internal corporate and BU stakeholders.

  • Research, prepare and deliver presentations to the CEO, and as requested the Board, regarding new growth opportunities and external M&A activity

  • Embrace and represent CBIZ’s core values in all dealings with internal and external constituents.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in M&A of the scale and complexity seen at CBIZ. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of excellent financial judgment and will have demonstrated the ability to create insights and actionable transaction ideas.

Candidates should have experience working with a range of strategic tools and demonstrate strong analytical and financial skills. Expertise in strategic analysis and due diligence is required. M&A experience, including integration of complex business models and unique deal structures is also required. The successful candidate will have strong experience working with third parties including law firms, industry experts, financial advisors, accounting firms, and other relevant business experts and professional advisors.  Ideally the candidate will have professional services M&A experience.

To be successful, the Vice President of Corporate Development - Origination needs to possess broad conceptual thinking skills combined with practical operations and implementation experience.  S/he must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the trends and operations for the professional services industry.   S/he must have demonstrated success providing strong, fact-based, clear, logical communications and influencing skills with a track record of success in highly matrixed organizations.  S/he must also be capable of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.  Knowledge of the financial, tax and legal due diligence process is required.

S/he will be a practical strategist with the ability to think across the entire organization, and the capability to research, synthesize and present relevant industry trends and findings as they impact M&A strategy.

  • Results Orientation: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to meet or exceed goals. S/he will have the ability, determination, and resilience to move major initiatives forward, injecting speed and focus with an emphasis on bottom-line impact.  S/he must be a highly motivated leader who is comfortable in dealing with ambiguity.

  • Collaboration and Influencing: Showcasing the ability to achieve results through colleagues and partners, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a collegial style and an ability to build informal/formal networks internally and externally to get things done. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with peers, partners and others who are not in the chain of command to positively impact business performance. The ideal candidate will help develop a performance culture and a team that achieves and exceeds goals.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum 12 years’ professional experience with 7-10 years in Mergers & Acquisitions or a related field with a focus on corporate development and origination.   4-year Bachelor's degree in business or finance, or related field or equivalent experience required.  Travel is expected to be approximately 50%.   The position will be based in Cleveland, OH.
