The McHenry County Sheriff's Department Merit Commission is seeking applicants for the creation of an Eligibility List for the position of Merited, Full-time Deputy Sheriff.  Applications are now available online.

General Information
All Deputy positions are full-time. There are three shifts. Schedules are: work 5 days, 2 days off, work 5 days, 3 days off. A Patrol Deputy performs a variety of complex law enforcement duties. A deputy enforces Federal and State laws, and County ordinances for the protection of life, health, safety, welfare and property.

 

Requirements for Eligibility List:
The Physical Agility Test will consist of the P.O.W.E.R. test.  Valid P.O.W.E.R. cards accepted (within 12 months of exam date).  Candidates must pass the physical agility exam or present a valid P.O.W.E.R. card in order to proceed to the written exam. The Written Examination will be the POST (Police Officer Seletion Test) and will consist of arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar and incident report writing. Ca
ndidates must receive a minimum score of 70% on each section.   The Written Examination will be conducted following the Physical Agility Test at approximately 1:00 p.m.

 

The physical agility test and written exam will take place on April 15, 2017.  You will be required to show a State issued photo ID to check in.  If you are planning on testing with us, you must submit your application and required paperwork and returning it to the address stated by 4:30 p.m. March 31, 2017.  DOCUMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THE EXAM.  When your application materials are received, you will receive a confirmation letter with additional details.

Birth Certificate

DD-214 (if applicable)

High School Diploma and Transcripts

College Diploma and Transcripts (if applicable)

 

Each of the above tests will be administered only once. After placement on the Eligibility List, an applicant must successfully complete any additional procedures as may be required by the Sheriff of McHenry County in his/her sole discretion (including, but not limited to, background investigation, physical examination, psychological examination, drug screening examination, lie detector (polygraph) examination, and criminal history check). The applicants on the Eligibility List are not ranked but are listed in alphabetical order. The Sheriff may hire any person on the Eligibility List as he/she deems appropriate.

 

Candidates presenting proof of certification as a law enforcement officer meeting the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standard Board's standards may apply for lateral placement on the list.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Age - Applicants must have reached their 21st birthday on or before date of hire (no maximum age)
  • Education - Applicant must be a high school graduate or GED
  • Citizenship - Applicant must be a United States Citizen
  • Driver's License - Applicant must possess a valid driver's license
  • Residency - Residency required for a take-home squad car
