Portfolio Analyst

Role Summary

This role supports the portfolio management process and is accountable contributing to analysis around strategic asset allocation, sub advisor selection, risk premia development and integration into the portfolio and dynamic management of portfolios. The position requires an aptitude for problem solving, dealing with large data sets, knowledge of financial markets and strong ability to find patterns in data.

The responsibilities of the individual in this position include:

Performance and Construction

  • Helps to generate superior investment performance in Russell's funds and separate accounts
  • Supports the portfolio construction process
  • Supports overall strategy development and implementation for portfolios
  • Researching predictable patterns in asset returns, risks, and trading costs
  • Participating in data architecture decision-making to support research analytics platform

Portfolio Management/Analysis

  • Analysis of money managers, generating output from analytical tools and working with senior research analyst in reviewing output relative to money manager investment philosophy
  • Support the PM team with all aspects of portfolio management including investment decisions, implementation, portfolio rebalances, transition events and daily monitoring of investment portfolios.
  • Run portfolio analysis, attribution reporting, performance analysis, ad-hoc reports, investment commentary and preparation of monthly/quarterly reporting.
  • Assist and participate in research projects and model development intended to validate and improve the investment process.
  • Stays informed of market events, helps formulate market views
  • Participates in quarterly phone calls with money managers
  • Prepares Investment Committee and Board reports
  • Analyzes and provides input on areas of day to day fund management relating to designated funds
  • Supports the portfolio management process, including regular monitoring and analysis


  • Reviews commentary and responds to business unit queries
  • Provides analysis to support reporting and commentary
  • Serves as subject matter expert internally

The successful candidate will have extensive demonstrable skills and experiences including the following:

  • College Degree required; CFA or progress towards CFA preferred
  • Solid writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly on investment topics
  • Knowledge of global financial markets, portfolio management techniques, and investments.
  • Investment decision making skills; financial analysis; strategic and theoretical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and to work on different projects simultaneously 
  • Knowledge of basic statistics
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Good listening skills - asks for clarification when appropriate
  • Execution: Ability to execute on time, under pressure, and with quality
  • Critical Thinking: Explores all sources of information.  Provides honest analysis for effective, timely, decisions
