Library Professional (Working Title:  Collection Development Librarian - Adult Non-Media):  Professional position responsible for central selection of adult materials that reflects and anticipates the needs of the public; also responsible for ongoing collection analysis and coordination of system-wide de-selection of materials. In the team environment employees will participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contribute to decision making and evaluation of progress. Employees will collaborate with co-workers to support the team process.

 

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

 

Duties:

Administration

  • Attends annual cash management training and assists in all areas of business unit cash management as required

Customer Service

  • Develops and implements standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of each inquiry by internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost courtesy and respect

  • Meets with vendors and book publishers

  • Promotes the value of products and services within the library and throughout the community

  • Uses web tools and social networking communities to engage and provide services to users

  • Develops strategies and sources to stay well informed as a readers’ advisor

 

Collection Development/Maintenance

  • Integrates research on circulation patterns and trends into forward-thinking planning and purchasing process

  • Develops and implements system-wide collection development activities in all formats

  • Participates in establishing policies around materials acquisition and disposal

  • Makes acquisition decisions consistent with policy

  • Evaluates materials and resources in various formats to develop and maintain the collection

  • Maintains an in depth and current knowledge of the collection

  • Ensures the maintenance of the collection through coordinated de-selection and replacements

  • Selects and compiles orders for new and replacement materials

  • Identifies, selects, and maintains special collections

  • Monitors the materials budget and keeps track of monies spent and encumbered

  • Develops and maintains a collection of reference resources to meet community needs

  • Establishes and applies selection and evaluation criteria to build a collection of high quality and relevant resources for Books and Digital materials

  • Develops and manages the library’s collections of electronic resources and provides distributed access to them

  • Selects, organizes and maintains the library’s collection of digital resources

 

Staff Development

  • Employs sound project management principles and procedures in the planning and implementation of programs and services
  • Participates as a member or Team Leader in assigned special projects

  • Provides opportunities for continuing professional development of self and others, especially in acquiring relevant understanding and skills

 

Minimum Qualifications:  A Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university - OR - A Bachelor’s Degree and enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain a MLS/MILIS within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred QualificationsPreferred year of library experience – experience defined as having worked in a library environment.

 

Job CompetenciesKnowledge of current and classic materials in all formats.  Ability to work independently and accurately with attention to detail.  Ability to adapt to various and changing duties as required.

Physical Demands:  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
