Building Codes Inspector I or II (pending vacancy):This position will provide professional and accurate inspection services as a member of the Building Division of the Planning and Development Services Department. This position will inspect buildings under construction and/or repair, as assigned, to ensure conformity with approved plans and building codes and enter inspection results into LIMS database. This position has a high level of customer interaction and will build and foster a positive working relationship, and maintain an excellent customer service standard when interfacing with both internal and external customers.
Note:Responsibility/Level of Position will be determined based on qualifications/competencies of selected candidate.
Inspects buildings under construction, alteration and/or repair, as assigned, to ensure conformity with approved plans and building codes.
Reviews plans and specifications for proposed construction buildings and building improvements. Issues notices of code violations applicable to their license(s); enters results of inspections into the Land Information Management System (LIMS) database and will prepare reports, worksheets and prepare daily activity reports. Researches files and databases and maintains a variety of source background materials for reports.
Provides and maintains an excellent customer service standard in answering questions from the public pertaining to building issues, codes and ordinances and interface positively with peers, co-workers and other customers across the enterprise.
Acts in assigned capacity in the event of any County declared emergency.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening
This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.
Building Codes Inspector I:AHigh School Diploma or its equivalent. Five (5) years of experience in Building construction trade or related field inspection or plans review. Bachelor's Degree or courses from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Fire Administration, Building Construction/Inspection, or related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience with at least one year in field construction (30 college credits is considered equivalent to one year of experience). Must have or the ability to obtain within 120 days of hire a provisional license as a Standard Inspector in the applicable Building trade. Must possess or be able to obtain in the Building trade prior to the expiration of the Provisional License (within one year of issuance of Provisional License). Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Building Codes Inspector II: A High School Diploma or its equivalent. Minimum three (3) years of experience performing plans reviews and/or inspections. Must have Standard Inspector License in the Building trade AND one of the following licenses or certifications: Plumbing Commercial Inspector; Mechanical Commercial Inspector; Electrical Commercial Inspector; 1 or 2 Family Inspector; or Plans Examiner License. Licenses listed above must be issued by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Other Certifications include: Damage Assessment Certification (from ICC), Fire Safety Inspector I (from the Division of State Fire Marshal). Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Building Codes Inspector I: State of Florida Standard License issued by DBPR as an inspector for Building.
Building Codes Inspector II: Multiple licensures issued by DBPR are preferred in various trades.
Job Competencies:Must have solid computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) software and must become proficient in other software which the County may utilize such as KRONOS and LIMS. Must be able to understand, interpret and implement applicable rules, regulations, codes, policies and procedures. Must have excellent customer service and positive interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
Work Hours:This a full-time job with hours varying Monday through Friday. Ability to work on-call is required.
Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
