Community Outreach Specialist: This is work planning, developing and implementing public education/outreach programs for reduction of mosquito breeding around homes, prevention of mosquito-borne diseases and publicizing the services provided by the Mosquito Management Services work unit.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening
This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.
Plans and develops integrated outreach strategy and implements exhibits and presentations on prevention of mosquito breeding and mosquito-borne diseases for special events, homeowners’ association activities, public and private school classes and other organizations. Develops educational materials for residents and visitors on mosquitoes and services provided by business unit; these include videos, tutorials, media releases, fact sheet hand-outs and reminders of various types. Uses digital photography and makes video records of unit activities for staff training and outreach needs.
Maintains and updates information on web page and Facebook with newsworthy information about mosquitoes and mosquito-transmitted diseases. Provides media interviews on business unit projects as needed. Makes daily updates of web page, Facebook and county notification program describing location of ground and aerial spray missions as part of public notification of insecticide applications.
Develops and maintains social media campaign. Takes and processes photographs. Produces educational outreach videos.
Plans and directs door-to-door materials as part of a container abatement program designed to reduce container-breeding mosquitoes. Provides service call back-up as needed, answers scientific questions of citizens, and assists with staff training.
Manages outreach budget and orders supplies and equipment for outreach. Prepares weekly time distribution and monthly progress reports for section. Serves as business unit liaison to Communications.
Participates on the section leader team; serves on seasonal Aide and full time employee selection teams as requested. Conducts other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: A High School Diploma or equivalent education and three (3) years in communications or outreach related work. One year of college may substitute for one year of experience. DACS Bureau of Entomology and Pest Control certifications: Core, Public Health Pesticide Applicator’s Certification must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire, if not already certified.
Preferred Qualifications:CORE, Public Health Pesticide Applicator's Certification preferred.
Job Competencies: Computer Knowledge/Experience in Microsoft programs: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premier Pro or other video and photo editing software. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Arc GIS skills are preferred. Experience managing social media preferred.
