Computercraft is seeking a forward thinker with experience in the visualization of biological sequence data to work on site at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to drive the advancement of existing and new sequence analysis and display tools. This individual will develop and oversee implementation of a user-focused vision for NCBI’s existing and new visualization tools that are relied upon daily for sequence alignment and analysis in various resources (e.g., Genome Data Viewer, Gene, BLAST). This work will involve identifying and prioritizing customer needs, conceiving a vision for the advancement of these displays and tools, and developing a plan to guide implementation. The candidate will work in a cross-functional capacity, communicating with scientists and programmers as well as NCBI leadership.
To see the “big picture,” the right candidate will have training in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related field and bench research to understand the science; familiarity with graphical displays (genome browsers), aligners, and sequence analysis tools to understand currently available resources; knowledge of how these tools are used by those engaged in basic research, clinical work, and educational efforts to understand the needs of NCBI’s users; and experience in the area of software development to understand the process for transforming ideas into public-facing online products.
