We are seeking an experienced Analytical Chemist - Fabrics for our First Quality Tissue, SE facility located in Anderson, SC. This position will be primarily responsible for paper machine fabric material research, analysis, and development. It involves used fabric testing and analysis across both sites and understanding the material changes through the life cycle. Also involves the testing of new materials and substrates through the fabric development projects both internally and externally with vendor partners and universities, including the development and project management of a fabric wear test unit. Backup responsibility for fabric service, inspections, and sample collection. Requires excellent interaction and communication with PD and Operations teams and systematic data analysis, storage, and report writing. Also involves some travel to sister production sites (i.e., Lock Haven, PA) and to development partner sites for fabric inspections and development activities.
Primary responsibilities include:
New fabric development material testing (i.e., pocket geometry measurements via the Keyence scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal stability via DSC, mechanical / wear stability to showering, abrasion, compression)
Used fabric testing, analysis, reporting, and filing (i.e., pocket geometry measurements via the Keyence, hydrolysis tensile testing, yarn widening and fibrillation, air perm profile, fabrics Sharepoint management)
Establish system to test the optimum frequency of used fabrics (TAD, forming, reel belt) for the proper fabric performance benchmark for each PM asset
Lead used fabric testing and analysis of failures and special events (i.e., holes, wear streaks, seam failures, trials)
Fabric testing for new patent developments
Backup role with fabric and related machine equipment inspections during machine stops and outages. (i.e., fabric wear condition – seam and body, air permeability, caliper, edge condition, vacuum box ceramic wear conditions)
Assist with used fabric sample collection, labeling, storage, and filing.
Development, startup and implementation of fabric wear tester in wet lab
Participate in weekly fabric development meetings with vendor partners. Site visits for new trial fabric inspections
Backup role in characterization of competitor fabrics and database
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
A 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, polymer science, Engineering, or paper science is required.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in laboratory testing or advanced degree.
Experience with analytical lab equipment, test methods, safety requirements
Knowledgeable in material and polymer science
Good analytical/troubleshooting skills.
Should have strong work ethic and be a self-starter with minimal supervision.
Attention to detail required.
Focus on getting results in a timely manner.
Hands on analytical testing skills desired.
Good computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel.
Excellent resource management for PD project completion
Ability and desire to learn and gain a good understanding of paper machine and related operations.
