Job Title: Political Project Representative
Department: Conservation, Washington D.C. Office
Reports To: Political Director

Context: Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of staff and volunteers in carrying out all aspects of the specific assigned projects or campaigns for the national political program. Develops and determines strategies, and evaluates campaign/program effectiveness for those assigned projects.

Scope: The Political Project Representative has program responsibilities and participates in the development of strategy and priorities for specific political projects or campaigns. Directs grassroots targeting and media outreach activities and the development/preparation of campaign issues and background information on candidates. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, candidates, vendors, the media and other organizations.

Job Activities:

  1. Provides national coordination and oversees the work in assigned components of the political program including activities in a set of targeted races.  Works in collaboration with national and chapter staff and volunteers to develop the program/campaign plan, and oversees implementation of the plan, and program budget/expenses.
  2. Collaborates with Communications staff and directs media outreach activities related to the assigned program components and campaigns, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to national media outlets as necessary, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  3. Collaborates with Field staff and directs grassroots targeting and outreach activities related to the assigned program components and campaigns, including developing targeted outreach plans, monitoring implementation, working with outside phone, mail, and other vendors, and providing analysis of direct outreach activities.
  4. Directs the development and preparation of campaign issues information and candidate background information.  This may include the research, writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, newsletters, political and voter education materials, and opposition research.  It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation‑related publications.
  5. Works to develop and to insure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  6. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.
  7. Provides political training and motivation to staff and volunteers.
  8. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  9. Performs miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

Seasonal Activities:
Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods.  Frequent weekend and/or evening work required.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • 2 – 3 years of campaign or related experience, which includes planning and managing components of a top tier congressional, statewide or national electoral campaign,  or an equivalent combination of related campaign, environmental and grassroots organizing experience.
  • Experience in creating and managing voter contact programs.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for work.


This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.
