We have permanent, part-time opportunities for Airfield Operations & Emergency Response Specialists in the Airside Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Services, the successful candidates will work alongside a dedicated team of individuals to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public at YVR. These multiskilled individuals will provide aircraft firefighting services, first response for airside emergencies, emergency medical first response both airside and within the terminals, airside inspections and other activities that contribute to the overall safety and security of the airport. Additionally, they provide emergency airfield maintenance services including Snow and Ice Control (SNIC).
Part-time employees in this role will average a minimum of 34.5 hours per week over a 56-day shift cycle.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing medical first response services, both airside and within the terminal facilities
  • Providing fire, hazardous materials and first responder services to aircraft and related airfield services and facilities
  • Dealing tactically with any emergency occurring airside, ensuring that airside operating areas are safely maintained, standards of emergency personnel preparedness are met, and that public and employees are safe and secure at all times
  • Ensuring high safety standards
Key qualifications include:
  • Recent, related experience, supplemented by completion of a high school diploma or GED equivalent (some post-secondary education an asset); or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment, power tools and hand tools
  • Strong work ethic with a high level of initiative and enthusiasm, and an ability to excel in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including communication and judgment, are required so that operational issues are addressed in a professional and efficient manner
  • A team player, capable of working both collaboratively and independently
  • A strong concern for the health and safety of self and others, and the ability to work safely and effectively under pressure
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage difficult situations effectively, quickly and safely
  • Strong customer service, leadership and teamwork skills
  • Effective and efficient computer skills in an MS Office operating environment
  • Ability to successfully complete emergency medical first responder training and undertake emergency first response requirements in a fast paced, dynamic airport environment
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and medical exam
  • Ability to travel outside of Canada for extended periods for training purposes
  • Clear driver’s abstract plus Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement (if not in possession at time of application, successful candidates must acquire within six weeks of start date)
  • Ongoing requirement for: maintaining fitness level; maintaining all security clearances, passes and certifications; clear criminal records check; good attendance record; and other necessary requirements
Shift work is required as the Airside Operations Department operates on a 24-hour basis.
After hire, as an ongoing condition of employment, Airfield Operations & Emergency Response Specialists will be required to reside in an area that allows them a reasonable response time to the airport. Specifically, employees will be required to reside within any of the following areas: Lions Bay, District of West Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, Anmore, Port Moody, Belcarra, University Endowment Lands, Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Delta, Surrey, White Rock, Langley City, Township of Langley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam or Coquitlam. Any location which requires ferry services to get to work is not within the residency requirements.
