POSITION OVERVIEW

To lay out, fabricate and construct or repair plant equipment by cutting, riveting and assembling ferrous and nonferrous plate, heavy sheet metal and structural shapes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Analyzes work to be performed by reviewing instructions, specifications, drawings or sketch select materials, supplies and tools necessary for the job.

  • Makes sketches and layouts for cutting and fabricating various parts.

  • Cuts, forms, shapes, assembles, fabricates, welds, dismantles, and installs, using hand and power tools, welding, cutting and burning equipment as required in performing his duties.

  • Dismantles and builds structures and installations using hoists, chains, and power hand tools.

  • Repairs and rebuilds parts for large equipment using riveting gun, burning torch, arc and acetylene welding equipment and electric power tools.

  • Rigs material and equipment for lifting as required and signals crane man when necessary to relocate or position the work or equipment.

  • Assemble fabricated pieces to produce new equipment or replace old parts.

  • Removes tools, equipment, parts and scrap at end of job.

  • Inspects and tests work performed in accordance with specifications or verbal instructions of foreman.

  • Erect scaffolds and tackle for assistance in boiler making and welding work.

  • Prepares required reports.

  • Keeps tools and equipment in good repair.

  • Keeps equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.

     

    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

    Rolls, bending machine, shearing machine, breaking machine, snips, scales, rivet sets, hacksaws, hammers, level, squares, soldering irons, chisels, small shaping tools such as crimpers and rolls, drill press, portable grinder, stationary grinder, jackhammer, overhead crane, pull lifts, chains, cables, wrenches, boilermaker hand tools, sheet metal tools and equipment, block and tackle, pipe bender, burning and welding equipment, rivet guns and buster, rivet forge, jacks, automatic burning machine, scaffold, and rigging equipment.

    MATERIALS USED

    Boiler plate, structural steel, sheeting, ferrous and nonferrous metals, rubber, acid, rivets, copper tubing, stainless steel, weld rod, corolux, canvas, wire, pipe, reinforcing steel.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to pass Company Boilermaker test

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situation where only limited standardization exists

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • Ability to follow instructions and direction with minimal supervision

  • Ability to understand and practice all safety procedures for work environment

  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints

  • Ability to operate miscellaneous hand and power tools

  • Ability to perform air arc and wire feed welding

  • Ability to meet the physical demands in a challenging work environment

  • Ability to provide own tools

  • Rotating days off and overtime as required

  • Basic ability to speak, read and write English

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 4 year apprenticeshipORminimum 5 years experience on similar equipment

Valid Arizona Driver’s License
