The Retrofit and Upgrade Manager, provides technical oversight to all technically based service offerings. The predominant focus of the role will be to oversee automation system upgrades/re-tools undertaken by the After Sales & Services team in North America. In addition the Retrofit and Upgrade Manager will also ensure internal technical alignment with divisional engineering groups throughout North America.


  • Provide leadership and oversight to the After Sales & Services technical teams to esure consistency between local service teams
  • Act as liaison between the After Sales & Services teams and divisional engineering teams to ensure technical alignment in the areas of mechanical, electrical and controls engineering.  
  • Direct the distribution of RFQs within North America to optimize capacity and leverage centers of experience/excellence.
  • Provide context and parameters to front-end (FE) team memebers, which results in the production of timely, accurate quotations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to back-end (BE) team memebers during the execution and installation phase. 
  • Build relationships with key ATS customers and ensure overall customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain an accurate project status tracking system.  Collect, monitor and report on performance at the department level for accountable discipline.  Ensure optimal utilization of resources.
  • Set and champion KPIs, reporting and contingency planning requirements for tracking performance within the function to  deliver results in line with approved forecasts and budget.
  • Works with the Divisional Service Designers and Service Project Managers to bring the highest level of engineering expertise to retrofits and upgrades
  • Participates/leads the concepting and requirements definition of a project with the FE Service design teams
  • Identifies and appoints ATS Approved Service Providers (ASP’s) to support upgrade revenue grow targets
  • Ensures that ATS Approved Service Providers (ASPs) meet ATS’ high standards of quality and adherence to established best practices
  • Provide expert judgment and expertise in the oversight and review of technical projects.
  • Improve the knowledge and capability of other members of the engineering department through mentoring
  • Acts as an escalation and consulting point for complex or critical projects to ensure risk mitigation and overall project alignment to scope definition
  • Ensure that the concepts and design of customer solutions maximizes the use of standard modules – leveraging developed and tested content across divisions to reduce design time                                                   
  • Oversee the development of innovative programs to meet industry demand.  Recommend and implement design and engineering procedures and standard practices to comply with industry specific regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.




A post secondary degree in Systems Design, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent.


Ten years of experience in systems design, development and qualification of factory automation projects.  Thorough understanding of robotics, vision systems, machine controls, structured problem solving, DOE, statistical analysis, precision engineering principles and GAMP is necessary.  Good written and oral communication skills and ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team are essential.
