In this role, you will

  • Develop and execute high-impact public and media relations programs that contribute to the Communication strategy and ensure timely, responsive, and appropriate communication across all channels, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and partners

  • Use your expertise in managing both trade and business media relations

  • Direct and oversee the delivery of contextual insights and intelligence to leaders through daily news clips, weekly social media analysis, and monthly content theme synthesis reports

  • Lead the company’s corporate responsibility programs and initiatives, including community giving, employee volunteering, scholarships and bursaries, and sustainability

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the public relations function and ensure the accountabilities of team members contribute to the strategic direction of Economical

  • Complete regular coaching meetings with direct reports ensure day-to-day tasks and goals reflect the needs of the company and function

  • Manage proactive information gathering and content analysis through mainstream and social media monitoring to ensure the company has the best contextual lens on industry trends, competitor developments cited in the public domain, and significant regulatory considerations

  • Establish measurement benchmarks and monitor core metrics to illustrate impact and value of earned media and editorial coverage

  • Plan and manage the master corporate narrative to refine and deliver stories and position experts in collaboration with communication and marketing team members

  • Prepare quarterly narrative and corporate messaging updates for leaders to ensure message consistency and visibility into what's being communicated

  • Deliver message and media training for executives and leaders representing the company in public venues

  • Collaborate with corporate development and investor relations teams to ensure alignment between PR and IR messaging, content, and stories

  • Plan, develop, implement and manage customer communications, events for various issues, causes and opportunities, as well as media relations and other programs to achieve favourable media coverage of our products, services, branches, subsidiaries, events and charitable donations

  • Plan, research, write, and edit speeches and presentations for senior executives

  • Produce the annual report and annual general meeting, in conjunction with the Finance and Marketing departments

  • Provide strategic leadership for corporate social responsibility initiatives including the Economical Community Giving program, employee volunteer programs, and corporate sponsorships and philanthropic partnership

  • Ensure compliance with operational risk controls in accordance with Economical or regulatory standards and policies; and optimize relations with regulators by addressing any issues

  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the Economical values and brand

Your Skills and Experience

  • University Degree and/or College Diploma in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing Communications, Journalism, English

  • 10+ years of experience leading the development of Public and Media Relations public/media relations strategies in support of complex business priorities

  • Excellent knowledge of current communication theories, disciplines, techniques, best practices and planning methods for traditional and social media

  • Experience planning and producing media content for written, visual, audio, and video formats

  • 5+ years of people management experience

  • Strong leadership experience, providing regular recognition for performance, providing on-going coaching, and working with team members on any performance issues

  • Previous experience as a media spokesperson, or direct coach to corporate spokesperson

  • Experience working with executives and corporate board members

  • Experience in insurance or banking industry an asset

  • Fluency in French (written and spoken) is an asset

  • Experience managing or collaborating with an investor relations team is an asset in this role
