Location: Please note this position can be based out of Waterloo or Toronto. If based out of Toronto, there will be some required flexibility to commute between offices

The Manager ERM: Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance is responsible for managing the compliance program which includes assessment of control design, validation of control effectiveness and reporting over:

  • Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR) supporting the CEO/CFO certification and

  • Regulatory compliance supporting the Chief Compliance Officer opinion under OSFI Guideline E13 Regulatory Compliance Management.

He/She has accountabilities within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program to support identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting of enterprise risks.

The Manager ERM: Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance also provides subject matter expertise to strategic initiatives to ensure enterprise and compliance risks are identified, assessed and managed appropriately through the implementation and operationalizing of the strategic initiatives.

In delivering on the role’s mandate, the Manager ERM: Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance works closely with Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Senior Management and Business Unit management across the company.


Manage the Compliance program:

  • Manage and continue to enhance the compliance program, policies and procedures to ensure continuous improvement and program maturity

  • Manage the ICFR validation program to assess, validate and report on the design and effectiveness of key internal controls to support the CEO/CFO certification.

  • Manage the regulatory compliance attestation and validation program to assess, validate and report the effectiveness of compliance with key regulatory requirements in compliance with OSFI Guideline E13 Regulatory Compliance Management and Corporate Governance Guideline.

  • Manage the validation of corporate policies compliance against compliance requirements.

  • Report on identified gaps and provide recommendations for improving internal control operations.

  • Manage management and Board reporting.

  • Manage internal and external resource supporting this work.


Support the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program:

  • Continue to enhance the enterprise risk management program, policies, standards, guidelines, procedures and reporting

  • Conduct risk assessment interviews and workshops with the ELT and their senior leadership team to identify, assess, mitigate and report on top and emerging risks.

  • Provide constructive challenge and monitoring of mitigating plans to address risks.

  • Manage the preparation of enterprise risk management reporting including adherence to the risk appetite, input in the Letter of Representation (LOR), various dashboards.

  • Development of specialized analysis, reporting and presentations as required for management and board reporting.

  • Support ad hoc special risk projects as required.

  • Assist with the development of corporate policies, standards and guidelines to manage key risks.

  • Foster the awareness of the company's policies and procedures by providing on-going expert advisory and consultative support to all departments.


Provide support to strategic initiatives:

  • Provide second line of defence input and constructive challenge to ensure compliance and enterprise risks are identified, assessed and managed to remain within Economical's risk appetite throughout the implementation and operationalizing of the strategic initiatives.

  • Support ERM's risk assessment and reporting on strategic initiatives.


Research and remain current with emerging best practices in compliance, risk management and reporting:

  • Research and evaluate leading and emerging industry practices and adopt continuous improvement principles to support success.



  • Relevant professional designation (i.e. CPA /LLB/JD or Certified Internal Auditor)

  • 3-5 years of related experience in internal/external audit, or compliance, ideally within the insurance or financial services industries

  • Internal/external audit experience with a professional services firm or experience in finance or internal audit functions within a public company is an asset.

  • Good understanding of property and causality business operations and of the related internal control and regulatory requirements.

  • Excellent stakeholder relationship management and influencing skills with the ability to effectively and constructively challenge stakeholders to drive appropriate risk management outcomes.

  • Ability to build strong relationships externally and internally with people from all levels to help foster a positive compliance culture.

  • Strong organizational and analytical problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft office products.
