New Roots Coordinator

Background/IRC Summary:  

Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees, and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. Through 29 regional offices in cities across the United States, the IRC also helps refugees resettle in the US and become self-sufficient.

Job Overview/Summary:

The New Roots program works with IRC clients and the community-at-large in two main areas: 1) youth gardening & food justice and 2) food security and nutrition. The program’s goals are to connect IRC clients and the community with access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food options; provide nutrition and garden-based science education in the U.S. context; and facilitate participation in gardening/food production programs.  

Major Responsibilities:

  • Design and oversee all aspects of the New Roots program in Atlanta
  • Develop and implement educational programs for youth, including gardening, food justice, and garden-based science activities
  • Develop and implement educational programs for adults, including nutrition, food security, and gardening programs
  • Assist with the development of community-based collaborations around nutrition education, food access, and food justice
  • Provide technical advice to support school gardens and assist with garden site maintenance
  • Conduct outreach to the community and manage recruitment of New Roots participants, including high school student interns
  • Pursue funding opportunities for the New Roots program
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records for all program-related activities
  • Supervise Americorps members, volunteers, and interns
  • Oversee and complete administrative duties, including report writing, completing expense reports, monitoring and reporting volunteer time, and other duties as assigned

Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal: The New Roots Coordinator works closely with the IRC Atlanta’s youth and adult education teams to plan and deliver programming.

External:  Global Grower’s Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program

Job Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of agriculture and production
  • Experience coordinating a horticultural program and designing and delivering training
  • Experience developing and implementing science-based educational programs
  • BA degree in agriculture, nutrition, or related field and/or a minimum of two years of relevant experience
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work with diverse populations; experience with refugee or immigrant populations preferred
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed

Working Environment:  The New Roots Coordinator is based in the IRC Atlanta office, which is a standard office work environment. The Coordinator carries out various job activities in school and community gardens.
