Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Senior Director for Facilities Services and Integrated Planning, the Sustainability Manager is responsible for enhancing existing programs, driving continuous improvement and leading the next evolution of Caltech’s best-in-class sustainability programs.  The Sustainability Manager will oversee initiatives in the areas of energy, water, materials, built environment, transportation, and emissions, with a goal to enhance Caltech’s core mission of education and research, reduce Caltech’s environmental footprint and promote stewardship within the Caltech community.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated self-starter with exceptional communication and organizational skills and possess the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholder groups across the Institute to catalyze change and realize Caltech’s sustainability goals.

Job Duties

– Advance Caltech’s standing as a nationally recognized leader in campus sustainability
– Develop and execute strategic sustainability plans
– Research, analyze, design and implement new sustainability projects and initiatives to address multi-dimensional, complex challenges in the areas of energy, water, materials, built environment, transportation, and emissions
– Make recommendations for best practices by identifying, investigating and evaluating new emerging sustainability technologies and their applicability to the campus
– Monitor relevant local, regional and state policies to identify risks, opportunities and needs
– Publicize, promote and communicate Caltech’s sustainability efforts within and outside the campus community including curating content on Caltech’s electronic and social media platforms
– Support the design, construction and operation of highly efficient green buildings including the coordination of LEED certification
– Establish and maintain goals and metrics for measuring Caltech’s sustainability performance, evaluating performance on a regular basis and reporting to internal and external stakeholders
– Coordinate efforts of the Sustainability Council and work closely with groups across the Institute including, but not limited to, Facilities Operations, Facilities Design and Construction, Faculty Housing, Security, Procurement Services, Student Affairs, academic divisions and student led affinity groups
– Plan, coordinate and lead campus sustainability events such as Sustainability Council meetings, Earth Week, Energy Forum and guest lecturers
– Represent Caltech’s sustainability programs to the local community; attend conferences and meetings; build effective partnerships to ensure cooperative efforts are enhanced and available resources are utilized
– Collaborate with peer institutions at the local, state, national and international levels to share best practices, identify synergies and advance the state-of-the-art
– Perform other duties as may be assigned

Basic Qualifications

– Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental science, environmental economics, engineering or other related field
– Demonstrated experience, passion and interest in sustainability and integrating holistic solutions throughout organizations
– Demonstrated ability to implement strategies to achieve program goals
– Excellent analytical skills and experience in cost/benefit analysis, life-cycle assessment or project financial modeling
– Self-starter with strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work comfortably and effectively in cross-functional teams, build coalitions and communicate effectively with a diverse student, faculty and staff population
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences and knowledge of social marketing using print and digital formats
– Must be highly organized and have strong project management skills as well as technical and administrative problem solving skills
– Strong understanding of and experience with implementing LEED guidelines
– Experience working with diverse local, regional and national environmental stakeholders including individuals, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses
– Experience with researching and preparing sustainability reports including knowledge of carbon accounting and environmental foot-print analysis

Preferred Qualifications

– Master’s degree in related science, management or technical discipline
– LEED AP certification and experience with other green buildings standards
– AQMD Employee Transportation Coordinator certification
– Knowledge of lab operations and familiarity with lab sustainability best practices
– Knowledge of municipal solid waste management and organics recycling best practices
– Previous experience with implementing sustainability initiatives in the higher education sector
