We are seeking an Environmental Health Specialist Lead, to manage programs and projects related to Environmental Health General Services, Water Supply Quality & Safety, Recreational Facility Safety and Food Service Sanitation. This position will work out of both our Eaton (Charlotte, MI) and Barry (Hastings, MI) county locations. Interested candidates should be passionate about making a difference to protect and enhance health by promoting and providing environmental health programs pertaining to public health.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Provide technical assistance and consultation to staff, industry representatives, the general public, and government agencies regarding interpretation and enforcement of environmental laws, rules, guidelines, standards and policies.
Review, approve, or deny requests for variances from laws, rules, guidelines, standards, policies and/or district environmental health regulations in collaboration with the director.
Oversee and evaluate Environmental Health programs and coordinate work of staff.
Assist in developing environmental health programs, procedures and program guidance materials to ensure consistent compliance with established program protocols and requirements.
Perform program assessments and recommend changes to existing programs, procedures and materials to improve environmental health services.
Confer with public officials and other community groups regarding environmental health programs and improvements needed within the community.
Initiate appropriate corrective actions, including a variety of legal processes.
Participate in hiring, staff orientation; implement staff development and training, and review and evaluate work products.
Assist in preparing monthly and annual reports of services and activities.
Attend and participate in training on emerging environmental health issues.
Ideal candidate will possess:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health or chemical, biological or physical sciences or related field of study
Five (5) years of experience in environmental health
Registration as a Sanitarian in Michigan or REHS registration through the National Environmental Health Association or ability to obtain registration within (1) year
Knowledge of complex principles and practices of environmental health
Valid driver’s license and a vehicle for business use or other ability to travel throughout the District
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc., and how to use them efficiently
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a regulatory setting
Ability to communicate visual observations and ideas concisely and in written reports
