The Sustainability Institute at the College of New Jersey seeks a creative and motivated person to join our team working on the Sustainable Jersey Certification Program as Manager of Policy and Planning. SI@TCNJ is a fast-paced "think and do" tank that devises and implements solutions to critical sustainability problems. The position will have a significant role implementing the award winning Sustainable Jersey Certification Program.
The Manager of Policy and Planning will report to the Director of the Institute, and will be responsible for leading a team of colleagues and external stakeholders to design and implement programs that support state and local government in implementing sustainability programs and policies. This will include developing new best practices, policy recommendations, implementing pilot projects, designing new training and technical support programs, and identifying opportunities for developing shared services. Issues in the policy portfolio include adaptation to climate change, energy planning, redevelopment, natural resources protection and infrastructure planning.
Manage major contracts and partner relationships for the Sustainable Jersey program
Conduct applied research and engage in report writing and policy analysis
Convene and work with stakeholder groups to design and implement new programs
targeting local governments
Update existing best practices for local governments to ensure they are current
Coordinate with external partners and funders
Design and implement technical assistance and education programs
Assign and oversee tasks to other SI@TCNJ staff
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy, engineering, economics, environmental science, or other relevant discipline plus significant relevant professional experience. A Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning, or similar advanced degree is preferred. Organizational capacity, creative and entrepreneurial thinking, and superior personal and communication skills are required.
The successful candidate will have a strong desire to make a difference in the world and play a role implementing a sustainable future. She/he should have familiarity with the varied economic, social, environmental, and policy topics associated with research and outreach on sustainable development, and with municipal planning in particular. The position also requires experience with project management, and working in a public policy development and implementation context. Specific experience in New Jersey is a plus.
