Function of the Position:

DAI’s Business Development Unit is seeking a writer to create succinct, winning proposals. A gifted stylist, the right candidate is also a facilitator of ideas, an insatiable learner, a meticulous researcher, and a natural networker with an appetite for engaging technical experts and translating their insights into compelling prose. Self-motivated yet team-oriented, the Senior Writer solves problems, provides counsel, and ensures quality control for diverse proposal teams—from the pre-positioning stage to execution. Simultaneously a mentor for junior writers and a sounding board for senior staff, the Senior Writer integrates written inputs from numerous sources and develops persuasive, original content based on research, interviews, incubators, and other solution-creation processes. Critical attributes include exceptional communication skills, intellectual curiosity and versatility, teamwork, flexibility, ability to motivate, and a "do-whatever-it-takes" attitude. Specific roles include the following:

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Take a leading role on at least six bids per year;
  • Develop preliminary strategies for responding to client solicitations;
  • Define a winning vision and approach responsive to the RFP and appealing to the technical evaluation committees;
  • Facilitate incubator, storyboarding, and key review meetings;
  • Develop effective proposal outlines, and ensure that the outline objectives are met;
  • Gather proposal information (research, interviews, and so forth);
  • Develop all inputs into compelling proposal material, revising content based on feedback from relevant collaborators, and ensuring that all elements of the proposal speak with one voice;
  • Lead reconnaissance efforts, travel on marketing missions, and participate in industry events;
  • Propose new, creative ideas to engage customers and partners;
  • Mentor less-experienced staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 11: 11 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field, and a bachelor’s degree; or 9 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field and a master’s degree
  • Grade 10 : 9 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field, and a bachelor’s degree; or 7 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field and a master’s degree
  • Grade 9 : 7 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field, and a bachelor’s degree; or 5 years’ experience in proposal/professional writing, international development with an emphasis on proposal writing, journalism, marketing, or related field and a master’s degree
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills across an array of material regardless of subject matter area
  • Proven ability to earn and keep the trust and confidence of subject matter experts
  • Record of superior performance in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent general communication skills and comfort interacting with staff of all levels

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field (overseas) experience
  • Proposal writing experience or similar
  • Knowledge of international development industry (terminology, trends, etc.)
  • Knowledge of technical content in at least one of DAI’s core competencies (Economic Growth, Governance, Environment)
  • Marketing experience
  • Language proficiency in Spanish or French
