Function of the Position:

This is a professional position on the business development staff embedded in DAI’s Asia regional division. The New Business Specialist is an integral member of small teams developing proposals for economic, social, or political development projects in the region. DAI’s main clients are the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other government agencies. Primary responsibilities (further explained below) are to coordinate proposal development, analyze critical issues for future projects (including in-country fact-finding), and support budgeting, recruiting, and logistics for business development initiatives. This position is most appropriate for someone who likes teamwork, diverse responsibilities, and competition.


Roles and Responsibilities

1. Proposal Development: According to the ebb and flow of new opportunities, engages in a portfolio of proposal development efforts. Coordinates the day-to-day activities of DAI staff preparing proposals for new projects. Serves as the information hub on proposal teams, liaising across DAI divisions and with partner companies. Troubleshoots common problems and proposes solutions, elevating complex problems to senior managers. Ensures adherence to assignments, schedules, and standard DAI operating procedures. Develops preliminary budgets for new projects. Moves from one assignment to another over time according to the ebb and flow of opportunities and the current portfolio of proposals under development.

2. Information-Gathering:  Conducts research and participates in “reconnaissance” trips to the region to prepare new proposals, recruit project staff, and market DAI to prospective clients and partner organizations. Supports planning and logistics for information-gathering and marketing trips.


3. Proposal Writing, Recruiting, and Budgeting: Drafts proposal sections, either with others or independently. Reviews and revises proposal text. Prepares initial budgets for proposed projects using standard spreadsheet programs. Helps identify candidates to propose for project staff positions, documents candidate qualifications.     


4. Training/mentoring:  Serves as a mentor and coach to new DAI staff introducing them to business development processes and activities; helps deliver training courses.


5. Other Services:  Provides other services, such as contributing to the development of DAI proposals for projects in other regions, or conducting research to support marketing initiatives, at the request of the New Business Director.


Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 7:  Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree; or 2 years of relevant professional experience and a master’s degree
  • Grade 8: Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree or 3 years or relevant professional experience and a master’s degree
  • Grade 9: Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree or 5 years or relevant professional experience and a master’s degree
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task
  • Proven experience working independently as well as in a team
  • Knowledge of USG thematic and functional policies and regulations
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and writing.

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of business development experience preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of DAI’s business model;
  • Field (overseas) experience ;
  • Knowledge of technical content in at least one of DAI’s sectors (Economic Growth, Governance, Environment);
  • Marketing experience; and/or
  • Customer service experience.
