Associate Consultants, UK or Brussels

DAI is seeking an Associate Consultant to join our busy Business Development Team. This will be a full-time, permanent role. The location of this position can be in either Brussels, London or Apsley, Hemel Hempstead - depending on the location/situation of the preferred candidate for the role.


Main purpose of role: To support the line manager and team in maximising the turnover targets for the Business Development Unit by providing management, monitoring and coordination of technical and financial proposals.


Key tasks, duties and responsibilities:

  • monitor, coordinate and prepare Expressions of Interest/Requests for Service
  • prepare or assist in the preparation of both technical and financial proposals, including administrative matters
  • maintain the relevant databases for job prospects and proposals
  • ensure CVs included in bids are presented in the correct format and tailored to the role required
  • prepare and update company marketing documents and information sheets
  • identify and liaise with other companies and partners for association purposes
  • assist in identifying appropriate staff for proposals
  • maintain communication with nominated staff to keep them up-to-date
  • tailor and format CVs of nominated staff
  • conduct research and produce case studies for use in proposal writing
  • research new market opportunities
  • accompany the line manager or other team members on marketing visits, consortium meetings or project visits when needed
  • coordinate the mobilisation of those undertaking marketing/site visits
  • maintain communication with nominated staff to keep them up-to-date
  • be familiar with project contract conditions; provide administrative support to project teams
  • maintain a record of dates/timing of inputs on projects; prepare GP figures; monitor financial elements of contracts and liaise with the Finance Unit
  • ensure initial project summary sheets are produced promptly, in the correct format and regularly updated whilst maintaining quality and accuracy of information
  • assisting in maintaining the company’s databases
  • facilitate information sharing within the Business Development unit, with other DAI offices and with external partners
  • play an active role in business process improvement initiatives
  • organise round table discussions with clients and external speakers, as needed
  • attend seminars and conferences and source relevant publications, where appropriate


Qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent
  • Demonstrable understanding of and interest in international development and working in an international/multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Demonstrable ability to write technical text
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Proactive, assertive and action-oriented with strong intellectual agility and ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally
  • Able to be flexible, versatile and tolerant in a changing work environment whilst maintaining effectiveness
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Numerate with a high level of attention to detail
  • Advanced level of MS Office
  • Ability to travel internationally if required



  • Experience of working with the EU and other major European donors
  • Ability to communicate effectively in French or Spanish
  • Proven experience supporting consulting services or international development projects
  • Experience of working overseas, ideally in a development environment
  • Experience of quality management systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively in at least one other language, preferably French
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant field


The salary offered for the Associate Consultant will be at entry level but commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues in the DAI Europe offices in Brussels, London or Apsley, Hemel Hempstead.
