INVEST is a flexible, efficient buy-in mechanism that helps USAID mobilize private capital. Through the large and growing INVEST partner network, USAID can access the localized expertise it needs. That includes support for assessments, structuring funds, and providing transaction advisory services.

INVEST was designed to address challenges that make it harder for USAID to work alongside the investment community. It ensures rapid procurement – within four to six weeks – so USAID can act within investors’ timelines. It enables flexible, specialized project design and implementation. And, it focuses on learning and adaptation to drive innovation in mobilizing private capital.

In partnership with USAID's private-sector engagement team, E3 Communications staff, and the DAI team, the Communications Lead will provide strategic communications support to the INVEST project and its component buy-in activities. For all projects which he/she is managing, the Communications lead will manage event firms, subcontractors, or STTAs as needed.

Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver high-quality writing and communications support. Develop communications materials including talking points and presentations, website content, fact sheets, presentations, reports, and other collateral.
  • Ghostwrite and place thought leadership pieces bylined by the INVEST COR and INVEST staff tailored to specific audiences and channels.
  • Identify and share successful INVEST models, tools, and key lessons INVEST has learned regarding the best ways for a donor agency to deploy grant capital to bring private investment into development. Coordinate with INVEST’s MEL staff to collect and share lessons.
  • Identify key events and other opportunities to share USAID’S knowledge with peers including other donor governments, foundations and grant-makers. Develop a strategy for INVEST-led learning events like workshops or roundtables and facilitate these events. Prepare INVEST and USAID staff for event appearances.
  • Work with INVEST technical experts and subcontractors to identify and craft stories that communicate INVEST’s impact, expertise, and value.
  • Develop communications channels and new products that communicate INVEST lessons learned and good practices to a USAID audience.
  • Provide direct communications support to INVEST buy-ins to mobilize additional private capital. This could include preparing communications materials, crafting and managing events, writing announcements, press releases, and success stories, and preparing presentations and reports.
  • Provide content and community management for INVEST’s closed LinkedIn group, which brings together members of the INVEST partner network. The LinkedIn group is intended to help new and niche actors improve their proposals in response to USAID RFPs and work more effectively with USAID. It is also a venue for sharing lessons learned and insights on mobilizing private capital for development.
  • Write a quarterly newsletter for members of the partner network, sharing thought leadership pieces written by the INVEST team, procurement updates, and a “What We’re Reading” round-up of high-quality, 3rd-party content.
  • Provide basic graphic design support, e.g., laying out and polishing Powerpoint presentations, learning products, fact sheets, and other documents; developing simple graphics for INVEST’s communications materials.
  • Support INVEST’s reporting to USAID.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • 5 years professional work experience. Experience with USAID, international development, or finance for development preferred.
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Excellent writing skills
  • The ability to absorb technical information quickly and make it interesting and digestible
  • Experience navigating complex or politically-sensitive organizations
  • Understanding of USAID priorities and sensitivities and experience framing messaging appropriately preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong team player
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving, fluid team setting with multiple stakeholders
  • Fluency in English required
  • Graphic design skills are a plus

The Communications Specialist will report to INVEST’s Director of Communications.
