Municipal Waste Recycling Program (MWRP)

Research Assistant – Job Description

Location: Washington, DC

Estimated level of effort: 10 days per month for 6 months

Estimated Period of Performance: September 2019-March 2020

Reports to: MWRP Chief of Party

The overarching goal of the Municipal Waste Recycling Program (MWRP), implemented by DIG and DAI, is to provide grants and technical assistance to organizations operating projects in Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam related to improving solid waste management and recycling, thereby contributing to the reduction of discarded plastics entering the oceans. In each of the four countries, inadequate waste management practices, particularly in coastal towns and cities, results in plastics pollution negatively impacting the marine environment. This failure to manage solid waste and plastics results in widespread damage to ocean environments and biodiversity, loss of livelihoods for coastal community residents, and public health problems.

The Research Assistant will support DIG staff in preparing a paper on ocean plastic reduction for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.  In addition to providing research support, the Research Assistant will coordinate with both DC-based and international staff and will be based in the DIG office in the Washington DC area.

Tasks include:

  • Researching background material;
  • Preparing supporting tables and other items to be included in paper;
  • Helping identify journals for publication;
  • Preparing bibliography; and
  • Assisting in the writing and formatting of the article.

Position Requirements:

The successful candidate will have extensive research experience, preferably in the area covered by the article, an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred, either completed or in process; completed master’s degree in relevant subject matter at minimum) and excellent writing skills (English). The position will be based in the Washington DC area and requires travel overseas.

Salary: based on salary history.
