The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks an experienced Senior Researcher and Leader to provide intellectual and managerial leadership for its South Asia Region Office based in New Delhi, India.  The Director of South Asia will report to the Director General and serves on the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the Institute. This is a 3-year exempt position, fixed-term, renewable appointment based in New Delhi, India.

IFPRI ( develops sustainable solutions for ending hunger, malnutrition and poverty in the developing world. It carries out research, capacity strengthening, and policy communications to develop those solutions and to catalyze policy action.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead overall IFPRI’s research, capacity building and communication activities in the South Asia region

  • Supervise the work of the research staff and provide professional mentoring for the regional Office

  • Mobilize financial resources to support research, capacity building and communication for the region

  • Policy communication to a broad spectrum of stakeholders (researchers, academicians, policy makers, local partners) in the region

  • Design and organize capacity-strengthening programs for different stakeholders in the region

  • Timely submission of reporting on program/project activities and budgets

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD degree with 12 years of experience in relevant field

  • Excellent oral and written English language skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work productively within a multi-cultural team environment

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work responsibly with minimal supervision

  • Experience in research on policy issues related to agricultural and rural development with internationally recognized publications

  • Sound track record in raising funds to support research in the areas of food policy, agriculture and rural development

  • Knowledge of and experience working in developing countries and establishing networks among such countries

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Language skills commonly used in the region

  • Strong publication record in international referred journals

Physical Demand & Work environment:

  • Employee will seat in an upright position for a long period of time with little opportunity to move/stretch

  • Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds

  • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading
