The R & D Processing Engineer actively evaluates and implements process improvements to remove or reduce contamination found in dietary supplements and food ingredients. Builds relationships with vendors and work together to supply ingredients with acceptable levels of microbiological, chemical, physical, and/or other forms of contamination. Travels both domestically and internationally to work hands on with suppliers building relationships, developing, implementing, and overseeing process improvements. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Utilizes extensive knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, and food engineering to improve manufacturing processes and eliminate or reduce contamination to acceptable levels in raw materials and/or finished goods.
  • Builds relationships with suppliers from around the world to solve problems relating to microbiological, chemical, physical, and/or other forms of contamination found in food ingredients and dietary supplements.
  • Works closely with Purchasing, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Operations, and all other departments involved with reviewing, evaluating and/or processing raw materials used for NOW Domestic brands, NOW International, NOW Canada, Protocol, Private Label and other brands offered by NOW Health Group.
  • Provides leadership role in identifying contamination within food ingredients and dietary supplements, determining solutions, and implementing actionable recommendations through process improvements.
  • Works closely with vendors and/or NOW manufacturing in designing process simulations, developing Process Flow Diagrams, and providing technical expertise throughout project implementation.
  • Remains current with industry, governmental, media, third party agencies, and other organizations defining acceptable/unacceptable levels of impurities or contamination found in food ingredients and dietary supplements.
  • Displays thorough knowledge of the interrelationship of product, process, and packaging.
  • Complies with safety and GMP requirements.



  • Supports a culture of safe production and operations; follows all safety procedures.
  • Responsible for safety performance in respective area. Responsible for incident investigations, job hazard analyses, risk assessments, inspections, training, employee involvement, and enforcement of workplace health and safety policies and requirements.
  • Acts as the primary communicator of safety information in the department.
  • Encourages employees’ participation in the safety effort.
  • Fulfills responsibilities as outlined in the company safety management plan.


QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • B.S. in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related degree and a minimum of five to ten years experience in food processing engineering in a food manufacturing environment required.
  • M.S. preferred.   



  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.



  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills, listening, decision-making, and organization skills required.
  • Excellent computer skills required, including Microsoft Word and Excel skills. 



  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.



  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
