The Test Architect role is responsible for defining the test approach and ensuring its successful implementation. The role involves identifying the appropriate techniques, tools and guidelines to implement the required tests, and to give guidance on the corresponding resources requirements for the test effort. This is a "big picture" person who also understands software development and can work with developers to ensure that the test approaches align with development approaches.  The test architect also needs to understand the business processes used in the organization.

This role is responsible for:

  • Identifying and describing appropriate test techniques
  • Provide guidance on the selection of the most effective test design techniques in a given situation
  • Identifying the appropriate supporting tools
  • Defining and maintaining a Test Automation Architecture
  • Specifying and verifying the required Test Environment Configurations
  • Verify and assess the Test Approach
  • Directing and coordinating the implementation of test automation and other test tools
  • Designing test environments
  • Designing methods for the creation of test data


  • experience in a variety of testing efforts
  • diagnostic and problem solving skills
  • broad knowledge of hardware and software installation and setup
  • experience and success with the use of test automation tools
  • programming skills (preferable)
  • software design skills (highly desirable)
  • Knowledge and understanding of metrics, code complexity, reliability modeling, performance modeling, security vulnerabilities
  • Interpersonal skills to be able to negotiate at times and exert influence to get ideas across.
  • Creative approach to problem solving and seeing challenges from different angles
  • Eight to ten years of solid test design, tool application and preferable software design and development
