The Health Information Management Specialist is part of the CQCS (Compliance Quality Clinical Systems) Department, who supports the agency through quality and compliance initiatives. The Health Information Management Specialist is a key member of this team and ensures health information transactions are compliant with the federal and state regulations that govern patient privacy/confidentiality: HIPAA, 42 Code of Federal Regulations, and more.  Primary functions of this role include health record management (record integrity, accuracy), processing releases of information (ROIs), and various activities related to clinical record quality assurance.

The Health Information Management Specialist will support the entire ETS agency. The nature of this position is self-directed, fast paced, and centered in customer service. Additionally, this role requires expertise in Health Information Management systems, critical thinking and change management tools, with an ability to lead initiatives related to the work, and exceptional interpersonal skills. The Health Information Management Specialist will travel routinely between ETS sites to promote HIM goals, and support staff in meeting the agency HIM objectives.

Job Functions (May Include)

  • Facilitates timely processing of patient records, both incoming and outgoing
  • Scans and uploads documents to the EHR
  • Comprehends data accuracy, coding and ROI accuracy
  • Collaborates with care teams to ensure vital continuity of care through health information systems
  • Exercises high standards of ethical confidentiality practices
  • Prioritizes health records requests
  • Multiple enrollment verification services
  • Audits the clinical record for deficiencies
  • Ensures healthcare record contents align with agency policy and procedure
  • Leads staff training to help establish compliance with HIM guidelines
  • Incident investigation and breach reporting
  • Risk analysis and management

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Registered Health Information Technician
  • AHIMA Code of Ethics
  • At least five years’ experience in health information management
  • Applied knowledge of health information management operations and best practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in 42 CFR, HIPAA, RCW, and WAC related regulations
  • Conflict resolution and cultural competency
  • Critical thinking and implementation of strategy
  • Effective communication skills both writing and verbal
  • Organized and self-directed
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office tools

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with Substance Use Disorder and Medication-Assisted Treatment practices
  • Quality management experience
  • Knowledge of SAMMS electronic health records software
  • Training and public speaking

Education 

  • Minimum two years’ college coursework in Medical/Health Records, Health Information Technology, Health information Administration or related field.
