Internews is an international media development organisation based in Arcata, CA, Washington, DC and London whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard. Internews has been working in Greece since 2016 to establish a Humanitarian Information Service (HIS) for refugees and migrants.

Internews is currently implementing the HIS project under the Mixed Migration Platform overall framework, under a consortium lead by DRC. The project is also funded by other small private funders grants.

The Team Leader will be a strong, inspirational manager, providing oversight in ensuring that all activities under the project are properly executed and implemented. S/he is a patient and flexible manager, with experience managing a diverse range of activities and people. The position will be based in Athens, Greece for the duration of the project, with field travel as required.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned:

  • Manage and lead the operations of the program, including overseeing all published material, both online and offline.
  • Reinforce and expand collaboration with UN agencies, humanitarian organisations and local community groups.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of electronic media and published hardcopy newsletters.
  • Ensure appropriate training for operations staff as needed.
  • Oversee the capacity building of staff in humanitarian communication, including Communications with Communities, story writing, multimedia production and technical aspects of the project as needed.
  • Work with humanitarian partners (UN and NGO) at field level to develop joint projects and represent Internews in bilateral interaction with key partners.
  • Explore new ways of engaging with communities, online and offline, and channelling their feedback to humanitarian service providers.
  • Maintain and update a database with relevant contacts.
  • Oversee multimedia materials (blog posts, photos, tweets etc.) from the project for external audiences.
  • Produce emergency response programs when needed.
  • Supervise/Manage staff in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Prepare and assemble materials for reports as needed for M&E reports required by the donor organisations.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the region of responsibility, including the local media.
  • Managing the development of focus groups, refugee liaison and access to sites and locations where refugees are hosted.
  • Assist the Project Director in shortlisting, interviewing and selecting candidates for hire.
  • Assist the Project Director in ensuring the project is in compliance with all grant and cooperative agreement rules, requirements and regulations as well as with Internews internal policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate closely with the Project Director on project planning, coordination and implementation.

  • Visionary leader able to inspire others to achieve project goals.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing media and/or communication projects in humanitarian settings.
  • Master’s degree in media, journalism, communications, international development, humanitarian sector or related field.
  • Proven working experience in working on Communication with Communities related activities.
  • Knowledge of, and strong working experience in multimedia production and multi-media team leadership.
  • Knowledge of, and strong working experience in radio production; video production and social media engagement campaigns.
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise a diverse team of people.
  • Successful track record in supervising, designing, managing, and implementing technical assistance programs.
  • Excellent ability to provide operational and administrative oversight.
  • A thorough understanding of the work of humanitarian and development agencies, including working within the UN cluster system.
  • Flexible, easy-going, stress-free manager who thrives in creative environment.
  • Knowledge of, and strong experience in, humanitarian issues, the EU migrants and refugee situation and human rights, and creative approaches to communication in humanitarian settings.
  • Experience in human resources and staff development.
  • Experience in organizational development, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to adjust to shifting political circumstances and creates programming accordingly.
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place and experience supervising staff.
  • Must be self-reliant, resourceful, good problem-solver, good humoured, and flexible.
  • Excellent English oral and written skills mandatory.
